16a West Del Ray Avenue

On the site of an old shed now sits 16a West Del Ray: a beautiful, new 1,000 square foot two-story living space making this property a multigenerational family dream.

Built in 2024 and designed by local architect Kim Robberts, no detail was spared in ensuring this accessory dwelling unit (ADU) feels like home for grandparents who made the move to retire in Del Ray close to family. When you enter, you’ll be greeted by a gorgeous colorful painting moved with the owners from their previous home, so the wall was sized just right to accommodate the piece.

Windows in the sun-drenched living room were placed deliberately – you’ll notice there are no views facing the main house to ensure privacy for all residents. Instead, a lovely gas fireplace on the front wall centers the living room and makes the space feel cozy all year long. Large windows on the north side are perfect for bird watching at the often-frequented feeder, see how many you can spot. On the other side of the house, a side porch allows for indoor-outdoor living away from the main house, giving the owners their own space.

The house has intentional features throughout to support accessibility and support aging-in-place. Sturdy handles on the exterior front entry are at arms reach to assist with the stairs. Inside, there are no raised thresholds for ease of movement. The second-story can be accessed by a stairwell with railings on both sides or by use of an elevator that brings residents directly to the primary bedroom. Also upstairs, you’ll find a bathroom with built-in grab bars and other intentional safety features; a multipurpose space that serves as an office, den, and/or guestroom; and second-floor laundry.

16a West Del Ray proves that accessibility does not have come at the cost of gorgeous design.
